playing place
As you read this i am either sat at Heathrow or sat on a shiny Virgin jumbo winging it's way towards LA and (right hand) points south. I am hopefully going to be "mining the stoke" in So Cal for the next 2.5 weeks and "excited" barely covers it! Stay tuned for future posts to find out if the reality actually lives up to the dream!

pet hates....
i love surfing.
Pretty much everything about it excites me. I can even muster the enthusiasm to surf one foot onshore slop in the middle of winter on numerous occasions but i hate, and i don't think thats too strong a word, rinsing wetsuits out, especially in winter!
It's always that irritating job at the end of the evening when you've got back just that bit later than you promised, hosing cold water over yourself by accident, struggling to turn damp slimey boots & gloves inside out or risk them stinking the house out (or worse still being banished outside and never drying)
I know i could avoid doing it, but knowing i'm not looking after my expensive investment even though it looks after me would bug me too. Least we are slowly losing rubber as the water slowly warms up.

gnarl
So with my rekindled interest in sidewalk surfing :-) i have been catching up on what's been happening in skateboarding since i stopped paying attention.
The impressively illustrated Kris Markovich is still dropping hammers. One of the skaters that i always looked out for in the mags, his balls out speed and eye for a big line (along with contemporaries like john cardiel) helped move skating away from the super tech tiny wheel doldrums of the early 90's. I think i wore out my vhs of the element video watching his section. Having ridden for probably more companies than anyone, he now has his own brand "given" a truly skater owned start up.
If you fancy reminiscing with me check this from Slap. Sick stalefish photo borrowed from a very talented Atlanta based photographer, Mr A Smith, check him out!

in desperation....
After what seems like the longest flat spell since records began (possibly), the forecast finally looks hopeful for later in the week. Lets hope the wind stays light enough to make the anticipation worth it!
That said, i have a fishy thruster (3 fins imagine!) to test from Gulfstream so it's bound to end up in disappointment!
Those of us desperate enough to check it early on Saturday were rewarded with a rideable ripple and a much needed salt water bath

note to self
I shamelessly stole this from Dane Peterson's blog for three reasons:
Firstly, it made me smile,.
Secondly, Dane has always been one of my favorite surfers, ever since he appeared as a slightly be-quiffed teenager in The Seedling, I've loved his super smooth, effortless style and his impressive noseriding. In the last few years, he's also become one of my favorite photographers, with an eye for capturing the little moments that make surfing such a special thing to be involved in. A friend recently asked me what i love in surfing and i pretty much directed them to Dane's site and told them " it's what you see here!"
Finally, Dane just sent me a batch of photos for a feature we're working on for Drift. Unsuprisingly, they're really good and i woke up feeling inspired in a journalistic kind of way & excited about how things are coming together(stay tuned for details :-)
I know those of you in Kernow are cursing the Northerly wind of the last few days but up here where there's a little shelter i've had some fun micropeelers and hopefully the forecast will continue to stay as it is into next week. I still don't fully understand why some people don't own a longboard for these sort of occasions!
